Being sick as a business owner

10 September 2009

Being sick as a business owner presents all sorts of opportunities for the business. Last week I ran for only one and half days before succumbing to this dreaded flu that has swept over the land. This not only knocked me out of action but put my entire programme out of kilter.

I have lost track of emails, appointments and promises made but not yet delivered. Being sick is bad enough but as this spills over into the business without having a sufficient back up to catch the balls makes it a huge challenge for any small business owner.

Lessons to take away from this all;

  1. Try to stay healthy and not get sick in the first place.
  2. If you do get sick, communicate this to people before you disappear from the radar completely.
  3. Update your voice message and possible auto reply on emails to keep people informed.
  4. Get back to work and feedback to as many people as possible to try to recover any lost appointments and dropped balls.
  5. Employ more staff to fill the gaps when you are out of action.

Bruce is back now and looking forward to the next few days.
